ZAGREB, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Croatian National Folk Dance Ensemble, Lado, celebrated its 65th birthday in November with several concerts around the country.


Hundreds of audiences gave a standing ovation to their latest celebration concert in National Theatre in Zagreb on Sunday.


After 65 year effort of collecting, preserving and presenting on stage traditional Croatian songs and dances, Lado has become a remarkable Croatian brand, sort of a bastion of traditional culture, Kresimir Dabo, the director of Lado told Xinhua.


The ensemble's name Lado is the archaic Slavic word which means good and kind and was frequently used as a refrain in ancient ritual songs of north-western Croatia.


Since it was founded in 1949, Lado ensemble has been focusing on diverse traditional music, dances and customs from different regions of Croatia, Dabo said, adding many folk dances and songs are vanishing from our life as modernization and urbanization.


Thanks to Lado's the first choreographer and longtime artistic director Zvonimir Ljevakovic, who collected a wealth of folklore material and then artistically adapted for the stage.


His choreography such as Ladarke, Vrlicko kolo, Bunjevacko momacko kolo, Baranjske zetve, Drmes, Lindo have become a trademark not only of Lado but also Croatian folklore.


"Now Lado ensemble can present 120 folk dances and 2000 songs from all over the country. So Lado has been described as a dancing museum," Dabo said.


Lado's unique collection of more than 1200 beautiful authentic national costumes is also prominent in the "dancing museum". Some of them are 100 years old and priceless and made with real gold, together with jewellery of archaic coins.


"All the costumes Lado collected are original and handmade. For some case it cost 4 month to make one piece. They are unique and precious as some of them you could not find in other place," said Vedran Drobina, the head of sales for Croatia of Lado.


Lado paid great attention to the rustic style of open voice singing, as well as the playing style of traditional instruments.


Today, it has 37 dancers, who are also excellent singers and 15 musicians who play fifty different instruments.


Alan Kanskj, the head if orchestra, plays 12 instruments and usually he play 5-6 instruments in one stage. Aleksandra Pticar, an outstanding dance, has been dancing in the stage for more than 34 year.
