ARANDJELOVAC Cubs David Ross Jersey , July 6 (Xihua) -- Traditional festival of arts in the town of Arandjelovac, Serbia under the name "Marble and Sounds" will last until the end of August, inspiring visitors with its sculptures, classical and folklore concerts, literary evenings and art exhibitions .


The 49th edition of the Marble and Sounds (Serbian:"Mermer I Zvuci") took place from July 5 at the town park of Arandjelovac, located some 70 kilometers south of Belgrade on the slopes of Mt Bukulja and Mt Vencac.


Every year new sculptors add their names to the list of artists that left their contribution among more than 70 sculptures exhibited in this open museum at the town's park.


Since 1966 when the festival started, exactly 324 statues that were mostly made of local white marble from the nearby Vencac quarry were produced on the spot by guest sculptors or ordered from international and domestic artists.


However this festival, with great tradition today, has hard time to find funds for functioning.


At this year's opening ceremony of the Marble and Sounds art festival on July 5 only one author, sculptor Richard Deacon from Britain uncovered his statue "Between Us" that consists of three blocks of local white marble that surround one massive block of red granite brought to Arandjelovac from Africa.


"Depending from where you look at the sculpture at some point it seems that three marble blocks surround the dark one, but as you move around it appears that the dark block is outside. Surface is half polished while on the other half bits have been broken off, so there is a conversation between the polished and the rough surface", Richard Deacon told Xinhua, explaining his work.


Sitting in front of the National Museum in Arandjelovac where film about his work was screened on July 5, he recalled a stainless steel sculpture that he made in Beijing, China in 2000 named "Just Us that according to him presented a dialogue between his own and the Chinese style of working with stainless steel.


In 1999, a group from China was looking for artworks for CSCL. "They saw my exhibition in Liverpool in England and they were really convinced by that so they asked me to do the work." Deacon said.


Comparing the two sculptures in Arandjelovac and Beijing, Deacon said that both have to do with collectivism, or "some kind of connection between people and objects".


"I got interested in this technique cutting blocks of stone and arranging them in funny configurations. Using two different kinds of stone and arranging them into one piece was also tempting, and the result is that marble and granite both fall into an embrace as well as into division", he said explaining inspiration for his sculpture "Between us".


Fisekovic Miodrag, director of the manifestation Marble and Sounds says that Deacon's sculpture was the 72nd that was placed in the park since 1966 when the festival began.


Out of 324 sculptures that were created at the festival in its history, "only 70 of the best pieces remain in the park", director Miodrag told Xinua after the opening ceremony.


He said that Richard Deacon made a favor to the town of Arandjelovac by agreeing to make a sculpture for a fee of just a thousand euro and estimated that it is because "it is a privilege for artists to have their works inside a park such as this one."


Mrdjan Bajic, sculptor that has been selecting artists for the festival in past three years says that there are more modern sculptures in Arandjelovac than anywhere else in the whole of Serbia.


"I am glad that this year we are richer for a work by Richard Deacon, such a famous author that came here out of his pure enthusiasm, despite limited conditions that we could offer to him, due to tight budget we are destined to", he told Xinhua.


"The park is what makes Arandjelovac different from other towns. Art belongs to the citizens and should be everywhere in the open space. Children should climb on sculptures, people should watch and often don't understand them and in that way sculptures should become a part of their visual memory", said Mrdjan Bajic.


Besides the permanent exhibition of sculptures at the park, late August visitors of Arandjelovac will be able to see numerous cultural events.


Except program that started in July 5 with a concert, Stanislav Binicki military orchestra will again on July 9 perform the folklore ensemble "Kolo" at the park, while on July 10 audience will be able to talk with the writer Goran Gocic, winner of this year's prestigious Serbian Nin Award for the novel "Thai".


On July 12 an exhibition of drawings and sculptures by Rados Antonijevic will open at the gallery at the park, while on the same evening there will be a concert of the Harp Quartet.


Olivera Katarina, famous Serbian singer will perform on July 19, on July 26 a band performing Roma music called Odjila will hold a concert, while the repertoire for August is yet to be announced.
